Forum: GratefulDead Subject: 5/14/09- The night it all came together

Yes- this is a Grateful Dead forum and I am about to write about The Dead- but I have to speak to any remaining skeptics, as I have been one of them for most of this tour. I started to change my mind when, a few nights before, I heard the Viola Lee>Bertha>Viola Lee- which was done so wonderfully, with Warren erally finding a way to merge with the band's sound. And that is the key for this new lineup- Warren did not try to mimic Jer in either phrasing or tone- his own phrasing and tone seemed out of place for the first shows. ON the 14th, it all came together.

The Crazy Fingers is great. The Terrapin Station is MAGNIFICEnt. The Estimated soars- Most of this show is just a testament to perseverence- they are bringing it on at top speed- and then wegetto the Encore: Scarlet>Fire Deal? WTF? Very Very good. Very Very impressed. Good luck to them.

I just downloaded the shoreline gig last night and I am anxious to hear that. The LA show you mention is very good. Overall I think they surprised many folks, including myself. At the very least for those guys to be playing 3 1/2 hours on back to back nights is quite impressive.

with that said, the arrangement they came up with on Deal is brutal. A great song in it's day but does not translate to the new band.

To the LA show on 5/9/09, I was there and I honestly cannot believe how fortunate I feel to have been there. In addition, I have been listening to the show over and over and I am not bored yet

Was at LA as well...really had a great sound and feel. Need to listen to the Shoreline to see if the same thing was happening there.

Was also at Forum show 5/9/09. Crowd energy was phenom all night. For me as the shows play out on this tour you can hear Warren's comfort level increase. Loving it. Hitting the parking lot early next time.

I threw that LA show in again last night and it holds up. I think it's better than MSG

Yeah, Lobster IMHO LA and MSG are very close, with the nod going to LA, maybe I'm biased because I was there, but that first set at the Forum was like nothing I'd heard or experienced in a very long time.

MSG: I really dug the Gimme Shelter, the Cosmic C. opening, and a really fantastic sounding Brokedown encore

Yeah, it is a coin flip. Both are very well played and the set lists are crazy

While I was not at 2009-05-14 I do agree with you. [I was at the Rosemont] In the past I had gone to The Dead with friends and had a decent time but the show was not the same. As much as I appreciate Warren it just wasn't a good match for me. Turned it into Gov't Dead or The Dead Bros Band or something.

Well I was miracled Rosemont by a tour bud of long standing. I hadn't listened to any of the webcasts or simulcasts previously. In fact I had the wrong part of the week in mind until Monday afternoon. For some reason I was thinking the shows were Thursday/Friday. Warren changed my mind that night and I've been checking out as many of the shows as I can as they get shared.

I must differ slightly with you though: while Warren was definitely not imitating Jerry, he was playing Dead. It was not the same way he'd played with the boys on past tours. And for me that night it changed my mind and I'd gladly go back to standing in line for 4 days to get a wrist bracelet for the random drawing for line order for opening day of ticket sales. Of course I'd mail order too.

As for the ticket price they're still cheaper than "competing" acts. What were the prices for the Rolling Stones last time the went through? Led Zeppelin? The Grateful Dead always kept ticket prices low, lower than other groups and they still are a damn sight less. It may be more than the $15 for a mid 80s show but after 8 yrs of GWB a $100 just don't go as far as it used to.

I'm more than a skeptic and a stubborn one at that - but it "sounds" like you're saying I have to give i9t a listen. Can I get a ducat (link)?

I went to 5/14/ at Shoreline and really dug it. However, they did not play Crazy Fingers that night. I think the hilight of the show was SOTM>Terrapin>SOTM.
